Telemedicine
Breastfeeding and lactation visits are best done in-person. Nothing quite compares to being with a dyad in the same room to observe the nuances of mother-baby interactions. When that is not possible, we can schedule an appointment via telemedicine. Telehealth is not a substitute for emergency care or comprehensive in-person medical evaluation when clinically indicated.
What to expect at a Telemedicine Visit:
- Duration: 1/2 to 2 hours
- Must be done synchronous (face-to-face) via audio and video
- Use a fully charged cell phone
- During breastfeeding observation, it is ideal to have a trusted second person in attendance to move the camera to allow for different views.
- Accurate measure of breast milk intake is not possible without a lactation scale.
- Precision examination of the dyad is not possible during a virtual visit.
- Internet drops, audio lag, or video bugs can disrupt the call and delay care.
- HIPAA compliance not guaranteed
- Telehealth continues to be covered by most insurance policies but it is important to confirm that benefit with your carrier.
